Who We Are
The Car Fuel Efficiency campaign brings together transport-related organisations from across Europe who are dedicated to building up strong and effective public support in order to influence EU laws that serve to reduce CO2 emissions from new cars.
You can find out more about the groups involved on our Who We Are page.
Background
Road transport currently accounts for almost 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe, with cars making up more than half of that. Under a “business-as-usual” scenario, emissions from global road transport are expected to double by 2050. Current levels are already unsustainable and without a significant shift in this trend, Europe will not be able to reduce its emissions by 40% by 2020. It is therefore necessary to drastically reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from transport.
What We Are Doing
Our groups are working together to try to change this trend. Last year we put pressure on the EU to pass a law requiring carmakers to meet strict CO2 targets for all new cars sold. Through media events, video outreach, and public pressure, we raised the profile of the EU proposal for car emissions targets. In December 2008, the Cars & CO2 Regulation was passed obliging car manufacturers to meet CO2 emissions targets of 130g/km by 2015 and 95 g/km by 2020 for new vehicles produced. Nevertheless, there is still much work to be done to ensure that car manufacturers are complying with targets and that the regulation is being enforced.
We are now working on car advertising because we want to ensure that consumers are provided with clear and understandable information on the CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of cars so that they can choose more efficient cars. Our groups are monitoring car advertisements across all printed media and in car showrooms in their member states to ensure that national governments are fully enforcing EU Directive 1999/94/EC on car fuel labelling. We are also compiling public opinion about car adverts which will help us influence the upcoming revision of the CO2 Labelling Directive in 2010.
